Songcraft - Joe Oppenheimer

SONGCRAFT is a methodology to spark your creativity and discover your songwriting potential. Everyone is born with the creative gene - but great songwriting takes courage, discipline and an adventurous spirit.

A UNIQUE METHOD:

  • The Creative Loop enables the creative journey by activating four key stages of the songwriting process.
  • Exercises and games open the creative flow so that song creation becomes a natural result of participation.
  • Overcome creative blocks and find a way through the confusion to come out the other side with new music.
  • Develop your inner ear and learn to transform the chaos of emotional reality into beautiful, ordered music.
  • Get professional feedback on your songwriting efforts and make the jump to the next level (and beyond).
  • Develop your stagecraft and engage with the Songcraft community of songwriters, performers and producers.
  • Utilise knowledge and experience gathered over 15 years of study, writing & performance, and explore the psychological and practical aspects of creation.

There is a magic in great music.

Song is what happens when someone translates a personal reality or fantasy into a musical form, giving it structure and therefore a kind of elegance. When we hear the blues, we resonate with the emotions captured in the creation of the song, because in our own way we've experienced the blues ourselves. However, as opposed to the real often emotional personal experience of the blues, blues music has taken this private chaos and arranged it into melodies and poetry, making sense of the pain and turning it into something beautiful.

The same alchemical process is taking place whenever raw and undefined thoughts and feelings are ordered and communicated with rhyme and reason. Anyone can develop the ability to transform inspiration into songs, but like learning a language, it takes practice to speak eloquently in the language of music.

The Songcraft Method is a process distilled from hundreds of creative excursions, mapping the transformation of musical ideas from inception to completion. For those stuck along the creative journey, this method will help break new ground and possibly result in a flood of new songs and inspiration.

From beginning songwriters to those with lots of experience but a lack of recent activity, the Songcraft Method is an invaluable guide to the creative wilderness and can help take your songwriting to the next level.

Songcraft is for you if...

  • You feel like there are songs inside you, waiting to be written, but you're feeling creatively stuck and don't know how to get them out.
  • You have plenty of ideas for songs, but every time you try to work on them you feel they aren't good enough, or you can't finish them.
  • All your songs sound the same.
  • You want to be inspired, and come out the other end with a finished product you can be proud of.
  • You want to actualise your dreams and take your music to the next level.
  • You have trouble sitting down and being creative, and you need a system to keep you accountable.
  • Everybody tells you that you have an amazing talent, but you have no idea how make the most of it and create your own songs.
  • You want to explore yourself and discover what you are capable of.

WHAT OTHERS ARE SAYING

What do past students think of the course?

"I'm glad I pushed through the fear and got up there. Thank YOU for all your support and mentoring throughout Songcraft - wouldn't be here without you. And awesome job putting on the Symposium - it was a really special event. <3"

"It's very cool, and such a different perspective and approach from what's already out there... I'm also in a phase where the mystery is really fascinating me, the space between performer and listener, and I'm looking for ways to enquire into this and make the unknown known."
